  • Original Demo Tape for Continual Sentimental War
    Cassette + Digital Album

When I started first working on this album I recorded a handful of demos onto a Michael McDonald tape (which you can hear in reverse on "Bad Times Mix"). I've decided to sell that tape.

Listening to it is a pretty weird experience--after a few moments of Big Mike, the original demo version of Kirk Varnedoe plays, except in reverse. CSW was recorded to a 4-track, which uses both A and B sides to record simultaneously. Apparently when I started recording this I had the tape in backwards.

Side B plays the first edit of "Kirk Varnedoe" with an extended ambient section. It's really beautiful, and happened completely by accident. Rather than upload this version I decided to just leave it on the tape.

I know this is a stupid amount to pay for a tape, but it'll be the only one in existence Even I won't own a copy of what's on here. I've also cut up the original Mike McD insert into a unique handmade label. The insert has a quote from Kirk Varnedoe.

about

Please listen to this album on shuffle.

I often see
the war and hope it isn’t real;
as some form of made-up cacophony,
a fictive progressive aesthetic royale, a
cycle of churches burning,
Building and rebuild-
ing. Can we have art-
istic armistice in our nowness?

Anne Carson: “Pleasure and pain at once register upon the lover, inasmuch as the desirability of the love object derives, in part, from its lack.”

John Cage: “I don’t know when it was that I found out how to let this month go by without continual sentimental pain. It’s very simple now, because I’m looking forward to seeing you again rather than backward to having seen you recently. That’s a happy way to be.”

Kirk Varnedoe: “In art we do not make things any simpler by making simpler things. Reduction does not yield certainty, but something like its opposite, which is ambiguity and multi-valence.”

Obliteration music for the hopeful.

Continual Sentimental War was recorded to a Yamaha MT4X 4-track cassette recorder. Mixdown processes varied, from running whole songs through guitar pedals into Logic 9 on my computer, or taking the individual parts and rearranging them via Logic. No one song on this album used the same process to become its final form; 8 different processes were created (some intentional, some random, some repeated and over-layered) to create the results of each individual track. It took a year and a half for this album to come into its finished form, and I almost scrapped it twice.

It was mastered, beautifully, by Zach Weeks, who had a very difficult set of songs to work with. I also want to acknowledge some others who made this possible: David Fylstra and Daniel Schultz, who got me playing shows again, and who inspired me to continue working ///supersun/// as a singular noise hound. Joe Davenport and Evelyn McLean, for listening to early drafts of this album, and for their kind words an encouragement regarding.
