about

Notes about the songs:

In Winter (for Mark Hollis)

Dedicated to one of my most respected artists. This song originally started as what was intended to be a long project dedicated to musicians who bowed out or disappeared from the public eye. One song is as far as I got. Mark Hollis wrote songs about spring, hence I wanted to write around the, “winter of our discontent” (Shakespeare’s Richard III monologuing his unhappiness). I don’t know whether Hollis was a happy or unhappy person, but I feel confident in stating that unhappiness is often a creative driving force. Originally released in the second Keymane’s Compilation (2021), this has been remixed and mastered for your listening pleasure.

Shadow Talk

Frankly, I hate the lyrics for this song. If I could rewrite them, I would. However I can also just get stuck infinitely trying to refine projects. This is another combo Hollis/Talk Talk nod, while also reflecting on the persistence of self-doubt. I wanted to make a mirror of the first track, where the discontent went inward rather than outward. As with all songs on this album, I tent to work backwards from a normal solo “songwriter” practice—such as building of bass or guitar rather than working out of a foundation that starts with the drums.

Young Turks II

The sequel to Rod Stewart’s “Young Turks”? You decide. This is dedicated to the late, great Scott Walker, and I attempted to mimic his ability to write around historical tragedy with a sense of abstraction that discovers, rather than avoids, the heart of the problem. This originally appeared on the first Keymane’s Compilation (2020), however I lost the original working file for it, and so I completely rewrote and rerecorded it in 2022.

Sluts for Confusion!

Track name says it. A love song dedicated to harsh noise music. “Music” should be in quotes, as I’m pretty sure it’s noise’s goal to not be confused with music. I often find I discover much about the nuances and depths of human psychology by way of overwhelming cascades of sound. A friend called this song, "horny Glycerine."
